Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a picturesque coast landscape of stiff rocks and colourfull villages between Carrera and Genova in the north-west part of Italy.

There is a medium distance hike going thru the romantic coast pathways, visiting the bright villages and allowing to enjoy this wonderful corner of Bella Italia.

I decided to explore this sunny region in May 2019.

When to go there

I suggest to visit this region in spring, to see the bright colours of flowers or in autumn when the wine grapes pouring. The summer temperatures could be too high for hiking bud grate to enjoy swimming in the see.

How to get there and local transport possibilities

The economical way how to get there is to use the flight to Bergamo – Italien airport close to Milano, bus to Genova and finally a local train to La Spezia.

Bergamo and Genova

As a bonus, if you take the flight to Bergamo, you have the opportunity to visit Bergamo and Genova.

Bergamo is an old mediaeval town in Lombardy at the foot of the Bergamo Alps – Alpi Orobie.

I suggest to spent there a day exploring the narrow streets, taste the local kitchen in small restaurants and enjoy the view of the city defence towers on the background of the alps panorama.

The second stop on my way, after night and day spent in Bergamo, was Genova – the capital of Liguria region. Genova was historically one of the most important Mediterranean ports.

In the afternoon I took the train to La Spezia and I went to the first accommodation on the way – Ostello Tramonti where I spent two nights.

Portovenere

In the morning took me my trail along the Ligurian coast to Portovenere. The path follows the cliffs above sea level. You’ll go thru steep vineyards and small villages.

Along the way, I walked past the marble mine, where is mined beautiful black marble with gold veins.

Portovenere itself is a small town with a port, a couple of restaurants on the pier and stone church on the rock above the sea.

On the way back to the hostel I caught a bit of rain and I got wet.

Riomaggiore, Manarola, Levanto

In the morning I started the most beautiful part of the trail going thru the colourfull small fisherman’s villages.

Along the way, I found a milestone marking an old pilgrim path.

Bonassola, Framura, Moneglio, Sestri Levante

The most fascinating shots you’ll find in the gallery. Because the path, going along the coastline in almost even horizontal level, was closed due to repairs, I was pushed up and down enjoying the elevation comparable to my alpine trails. The local hills attacking the 800 metres over the sea level and I started at the sea.

Back home

From Sestri Levante, I took the train back to Genova, then bus to Bergamo and return flight to the Czech Republic.
